Anthony Hopkins Celebrates 50 Years of Sobriety, Shares Uplifting “Choose Life” Message

Anthony Hopkins

At 86, Sir Anthony Hopkins carries the dignified presence of a legendary actor, but this week he shared a celebration far more personal than any award: 50 years of continuous sobriety.

In a heartfelt video posted to social media, the two-time Oscar winner reflected on his journey from addiction to peace, ending with a simple but powerful message to anyone struggling: “Choose life.”

A Milestone of Peace and Purpose

“Fifty years ago today, I had a wake-up call,” Hopkins said in the video, speaking calmly and directly to the camera. “I was headed for disaster. I was drinking myself to death.”

He described December 29, 1974, as the day he decided to change, crediting a supportive recovery community and his own determination for the turnaround.

“I’m not a preacher, but I’ve found that life is so much simpler without the clutter of addiction,” he shared. “If you’re struggling, know that you’re not alone. There is hope. Choose life.

From Chaos to Clarity

Hopkins has been open in the past about the depths of his alcohol addiction during his early career, a period he once described as “chaotic” and “self-destructive.” His decision to pursue sobriety preceded some of his most iconic roles, including his Oscar-winning performance as Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs.

In interviews, he has often linked his creative clarity and emotional stability to his sober lifestyle, calling it the foundation upon which he rebuilt his life and career.

A Message That Resonates

The video quickly drew emotional responses from fans, fellow actors, and public figures. Many thanked him for his vulnerability, while others shared how his story has inspired their own paths to recovery.

Hopkins’ wife, Stella Arroyave, also shared the video with the caption: “My hero. 50 years of grace and gratitude.”

More Than an Actor—An Advocate

Beyond his film legacy, Hopkins has quietly become a voice of encouragement in the recovery community. He often incorporates themes of redemption and second chances into his public talks, and his candidness about mental health and addiction has made him a relatable figure beyond the screen.

His “choose life” message echoes the tone of his recent interviews, where he speaks frequently about gratitude, mindfulness, and the importance of living without regret.
